ACADEMY AWARD WINNER - BURNT BY THE SUN

Synopsis

A long summer day in Russia, 1936. Serguei Kotov (Nikita Mikhalkov), an aging military hero of the Bolshevik revolution, is enjoying an idyllic life in his country house, together with his captivating wife Maroussia and numerous family members and friends. Kotov's serenity is interrupted by Dimitri (Oleg Menchikov), a young man who was Maroussia's lover a decade ago, before leaving under mysterious circumstances. As he rekindles Maroussia's memories of their romance and charms Kotov's vivacious daughter Nadia, the tension between Dimitri and Kotov builds. Kotov begins to suspect sinister motives for Dimitri's reappearance.

One of the first Russian films to deal openly with the Stalin purges, and a mesmerisingly beautiful chronicle of love, family, and the intrusion of politics. Winner of the Academy Award® for Best Foreign Language Film, and the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival (1994), Burnt by the Sun is a masterpiece of contemporary cinema.
