Umbrella at SUFF – 2022 Program

I LOVE MY DAD

Director: James Morrosini
Origin: Canada (2021)

Celebrating its National release at SUFF, I LOVE MY DAD is based on writer, director, and star James Morosini’s true life experience. A rompy cringe, comedy that follows Chuck (Patton Oswalt), a hopelessly estranged father who desperately wants to reconnect with his troubled son, Franklin (Frank Morosini). Blocked on all communication channels and concerned for his sons life, Chuck impersonates a waitress online and starts messaging with Franklin. As things spiral and Franklin starts to fall for the girl on the other side of the screen, Chuck has inadvertadly started to catfish his own son – whoops!

ON THE COUNT OF THREE

Director: Jerrod Carmichael
Origin: Canada (2021)

This film is not only responsible for Papa Roach being stuck in my head for days in end, its also responsible for igniting some profound thoughts about friendship and suicide. Jerrod Carmichael makes his directorial debut and stars in ON THE COUNT OF THREE, a darkly comic feature about two best friends, Val (Carmichael) and Kevin (Christopher Abbott), on the last day of their lives.

SOMETHING IN THE DIRT

Director: Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead
Origin: United States (2022)

If you were fans of Benson & Moorheads previous Umbrella releases SYNCHRONIC and THE ENDLESS, you will not want to miss this. When neighbour’s John and Levi witness supernatural events in their Los Angeles apartment building, they realise documenting the paranormal could inject some fame and fortune into their wasted lives. An ever-deeper, darker rabbit hole, their friendship frays as they uncover the dangers of the phenomena, the city and each other.
